In 1836, Mr. Andrew Crosse was conducting his electrocrystallisation experiments when he saw something moving. Soon his apparatus was crawling with "Acarus Crossii," describing them, "the perfect insect, standing erect on a few bristles which formed its tail."
He didn't claim to have created life, but newspaper reporting intimated this, and Crosse received death threats from religious folk.
